On your arrival, you will be met by one of our professional staff and taken directly to your first nights’ accommodation (a short 15-minute drive), where you will be greeted by a local English speaking family who will welcome you with open arms. Relax in the gardens, or take a stroll down to historical Cavtat, before enjoying a home cooked meal in the evening and an informal orientation with Craig Derrick. Craig will introduce you to your fellow travellers, go over the planned itinerary and explain any alternative plans should the weather not be on our side. Although the Dubrovnik - Neretva region of Croatia does boast the sunniest of weather, the mildest of winters and the warmest of hospitality, the weather is beyond our control.
After a typical Dalmatian breakfast, we drive through the valley of Konavle, visiting the quaint villages. Lunch on the banks of the Ljuta River enjoying freshwater trout or traditional meat under the bell at a family restaurant. We continue up the mountain road to historic Sokol Castle and a working monastery, the panorama from the mountain pass reaches the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro down to the Adriatic Sea. Driving the coastal road past Cavtat to the picturesque coastal village of Mlini, passing through Zupa valley to the hidden gem of Saint Vincent’s Monastery which houses handcrafted arts and crafts and the chapel with its centuries-old wall reliefs and paintings. We then head to Srd to capture the breathtaking sunset and bird’s eye view of the Old City of Dubrovnik. Finally, travel to the coastal village of Orasac to enjoy another home cooked meal for the evening.
Start the morning with a substantial Croatian breakfast with our hosts. Visit the historical Trsteno Arboretum, where you can take a walk under the shade of ancient trees and see your reflection in the Neptune and Nymphs Fountain. We will drive to a nearby lookout over the area, towards the historical Island of Korcula, the birthplace of Marco Polo. The remainder of the day will be spent exploring Ston, its ancient salt flats and if you’re feeling up to the challenge of climbing the second longest wall walk in the world after China’s of course. Our plan is to then be greeted by our hosts for the evening and another traditional family meal.
This is one of Craig’s favourite photography playgrounds, from the windswept beaches that host world-class windsurfers to the meandering Neretva River. The Metkovic irrigation canals which provide the orchards of mandarins, oranges and also the local food delicacies of frog and eel. Wild bird populations are abundant all year round. With the mountains surrounding the delta area, the lighting is atmospheric and ever-changing. We will meander our way back to Orasac to our previous hosts for yet another delightful night of good food and hospitality.
An early start after breakfast to arrive on the outskirts of Dubrovnik stopping at the Frano Tudjman Bridge to view the harbour of Gruz. To get the most of Dubrovnik be prepared to walk and explore inside and outside of the walls. This is the backdrop for many movies and TV series with the popular Game of Thrones amongst them. Walk the walls of the old city and view the famous terracotta rooftops. All the nooks and crannies will keep you enthralled for hours. You may want to make your way back up to Srd via the cable car (cost not included) a short 4-minute ride. There is a restaurant at the summit. The afternoon will be flexible in the sense of driving back to our accommodation for the night with our previous hosts down in Cavtat.
After breakfast and a farewell to our hosts we will be there for you. If you have a later flight you may wish to visit Cavtat, or you may be extending your stay in Dubrovnik, whichever you decide to do we will provide transfers to Dubrovnik Airport or Sea Port transfers.
